SUCCESS STORIES

How one of the leading universities in Latin America revolutionized its digital learning ecosystem with Genially

The University of Chile is a public institution with a solid track record in academic excellence, research and innovation. Founded in 1842, it is among the 6 best universities in Latin America, according to the QS World University Ranking 2025.

Its Online Education team has integrated Genially into its Open edX-based platform to offer an interactive and highly motivating learning experience. Today, the university has more than 100 active Genially accounts in undergraduate, graduate and institutional training courses.

THE CHALLENGE

Make digital learning truly connect with students

Since 2018, the Online Education team at the University of Chile has opted for virtual teaching based on open platforms, such as Open edX, to develop a more autonomous, accessible and flexible educational proposal. They wanted a model that would give them total technological sovereignty, control of data, continuous improvement of the student experience and allow them to share developments with other institutions.

But a key challenge arose: the lack of real interactivity with digital content. Digital content was failing to engage students. PDFs and static videos were not enough. They needed a tool that would transform the experience to make it more active, visual, and motivating, something that would allow them to check how students were interacting with the digital content.

This vision led them to look for external tools to complement their own platform.

THE SOLUTION

A tool that brings content to life

Genially was integrated as a natural solution to the question of creating interactive content. Genially’s ready-made teaching materials, presentations, quizzes, emphasis on class dynamics, gamification and visual elements all fit perfectly with the University’s vision for encouraging student participation.

A particularly valued feature was real-time, frictionless online editing. With Genially, teachers can update resources directly within the tool,  while changes are automatically reflected in courses, without the need to re-import into the Open edX platform.

The idea was that the student could make decisions within the content, as in an interactive book.

RESULTS

More student participation, less effort for teachers

Thanks to Genially, the team was able to significantly increase student interaction. A key feature was the individual activity tracking that records how each student interacts with the content. It keeps track of the total number of times a genially has been accessed, total duration of usage, number and percentage of pages viewed, date of first access, and so on.

This feature has simplified the tracking of student progress and participation without the need for additional solutions.

Genially allows you to assign a score if the student views all the sheets and answers a final question. We did some tests and it was very intuitive.

With more than 5,000 teachers at the university, demand for more access to Genially has grown exponentially. The team expects to reach 250 active licenses by 2025, and already has a prioritization system for allocating accounts in the face of high demand.

Genially has transformed the way the University of Chile delivers knowledge, allowing for greater  autonomy, interactivity and a truly intuitive experience for teachers and students alike.
