The challenge

The challenge: reconnecting with students

Digital learning was already part of everyday life at Universidad San Buenaventura, but something was still missing. Students showed very little interest in the courses: they logged in to the platform, downloaded the files, or played videos at 2x speed so they could go straight to the assessment. Course sessions lasted around 10 minutes. The goal was clear: students needed to regain an active role without losing academic rigor.

The solution: interactive experiences integrated into Moodle and designed for active learning

Universidad San Buenaventura began using Genially as part of its virtual education ecosystem and now uses it every day for practically everything: asynchronous modules, interactive navigable infographics, institutional presentations, and courses for external clients. The Moodle integration via LTI made it easier for content to become part of the usual learning environment, while SCORM, live activities, version history, and the freedom to define the appearance of each element helped meet the quality standards the university reviewed year after year.

The rollout also involved an internal challenge: some instructors from traditional areas feared that interactivity would reduce academic rigor. The team addressed that resistance by turning dense bibliography into interactive infographics with icons, tooltips, and navigable windows. This way, the content kept its depth and academic rigor while becoming easier to explore and understand: cognitive load is lower. Students also arrived better prepared and could locate information precisely, even referring to specific parts of the resource, such as “slide 3, button 1”.

Results

Results: longer sessions, lower course dropout rates, more innovation across teams, and an experience that gets students actively involved

Adding interactivity to educational and informational content has helped Universidad San Buenaventura see greater student interest and participation. With Genially, Universidad San Buenaventura went from sessions of less than 10 minutes to sessions of 25-30 minutes per student. It also reduced the course dropout rate by 15% to 20%. The university also observed more active participation and a stronger “explorer spirit” among students, who stopped treating content like a box to tick and began exploring it with more intention.

There was also a shift within the teaching team: instructors from traditional areas joined in once they saw that the interactive format could synthesize dense content without losing academic rigor. In third-party courses, the effect even went both ways. During a workshop with business owners from Valle del Cauca, participants themselves asked to learn how to create their pitches in Genially. For the university, the value lay in making content drive retention, understanding, and active learning.
